ship marketing and writing content for numerous markets online – all combining into a
powerful force for your business.

What Are Your Specific Business Needs?

First off, if you’re looking to hire a done-for-you service for Social Media, let’s take a
good look at your goals and what you want.

If you’re satisfied with someone posting for you 1-2 times per day, sharing the latest
funny video or quotes  or if you’d like someone to create and load your wall with quote
graphics, then my suggestion would be to train and hire someone for that job.  Note that
most professionals do not advise that you hire a youngster to do your social media.
Teens may be incredibly tech savvy, but the finesse and professionalism you’d want for
a business would likely come from someone older (as in 35-65 age range).

If you’re looking for serious market analysis and total professional commitment to helping
you connect with your audience, then hiring someone to do your social media marketing
may make
sense.

What Are 5 Key Differences between a Good Speaker and an Excellent Speaker?

One question asked in a LinkedIn group today was, “What do you think are the most effective qualities that make the difference between being a good trainer and a great trainer?”

As a teacher of kindergarten through fourth grades for 17 years, I can assert that you have to be engaging to get those sweet little ears to listen to you amid the cacophony to which they’re continually exposed!  But how can you capture the hearts and minds of a diverse audience, with varying needs and interests?

You can imagine – the keys include speaking to the core brilliance pattern of your audience!

My top 5 tips for being an excellent speaker and crafting a powerful signature speech include…

1. Have an attitude of genuine concern that folks’ lives will be transformed  by what you have to say.  This intention includes making the training a safe place to share and engage without fear of judgment.

Make sure the training is more about the transformation of the listener, less about you.  Choose engaging openers and activities, but always give folks an option to opt out.  Let people know it’s okay to say, “Pass” in a group setting if they’re not comfortable answering a question.  The safer a participant feels in your audience, the more trust he’ll have for you, the more he’ll engage, and the more meaning he’ll take away from the event.

2.  Give real-life examples of how others have used what you’re sharing to create positive change.

Sharing how your product or service has changed the experiences of others keeps folks listening, engaged, and inspired during your presentation.  If you can impart a steady flow of hope throughout your talk  – that the listener can experience radical and transformational change in her life – you will keep her riveted to your material!

3.  Vary your method of delivery every half hour so participants’ brains continue to stay engaged.

Eric Jensen’s books are great for ideas along this line.  Basically, an adult mind can engage a concept for about 20-30 minutes before losing focus.  If the concept is brand new or made up of several steps, then you’re looking at holding attention 10-15 minutes.

Intersperse key activities, feedback, and reflection throughout your talk to keep your audience on task and interacting meaningfully with your material.

4.  Speak to all core-brilliance types in an interactive manner -so that all brain pattern types are fully engaged and see the meaning of what you’re saying.

In our Speaking from the Core™ training, we discuss the power of addressing all four brain patterns in your signature speech or training.   When you match your language to the core need of the audience, eyes light up with aha’s, facial expressions relax, and trust with the speaker is instantaneous.  Your ability to get your message across and to enhance understanding becomes laser sharp.

5.  Share bite-sized chunks that can be immediately put into use without further training.

People find more valuable than anything else- the keys to creating the desired result.  When we dump all our best knowledge on them, even if done with passion and sincerity, our precious audience can still leave unchanged – perhaps just more confused.   Allow your audience time to interact with your content and make it experiential.  That is the first step to changing their lives for the better.

If there’s supplementary material you didn’t cover, give them a link to go download it.  That way folks don’t leave overloaded, but inspired to continue learning.

Three Tips to Writing Book Bios

I love writing- all kinds of writing. Non-fiction and comedy are my favorites, but I love it all –  from fiction to sales copy.  I never entertain writer’s block and most of the time, words flow easily.

Unless I am faced with writing the dreaded… bio!  Then the neurons start to fizzle, and I’m staring at an empty computer screen.

Bios can be so challenging, unless I’m writing them for someone else.

In a bio, you have to be all that, a bag of chips and the dip – and prove it in about two paragraphs.

Most of us aren’t used to bragging on ourselves to the point where we can write a truly sizzling bio.

I’d like to share three tips that can help.

Tip #1

First, step outside of your humility circle.  Give yourself permission to shower yourself with the highest praise.

Imagine that Oprah is interviewing you, and giving a 5-sentence description of you to an audience which will have them leaping up out of their seats, reaching out to you,  just hoping you will touch their hands as you walk toward the stage.  And imagine that this bio that Oprah reads will bring wave after wave of traffic to your site, people who buy your book and whatever else you have to offer.

But all that is contingent on these 5 sentences.

So, your first draft of your bio is going to be off the charts.  Most of us fumble with a half-hearted bio and then try to add some good stuff to it to make it better.  That is a recipe for boring and frustration.

It’s harder to take a boring bio and add energy to it.  So, do the bragadocious bio first.  Then you can edit that gloriosity and still keep a strong energy.

Tip #2

Tell something interesting about yourself that draws folks to you in an endearing way.  For a lot of people, this means telling how you got started.  People love a good start-up story, even if you go clear back to childhood to grab it.  It’s likely that if you’re living your passion, something you did in childhood is connected to it.  So link up to that in your bio to connect with people.

Tip #3

Have three other marketers who know you and your work look over your bio for extra pizazz.  It’s hard sometimes to sum our own brilliance up in one capsule.  So be brave, share your bio and get some input from creative folks who know you well.

Hope this has been helpful to you!

Keys to Writing Sizzling Back Cover Copy

In many instances, the back cover sells the book.  It’s prime real estate.  I might pick a book up off the shelf due to an intriguing title, but I’m not ready to buy until you’ve convinced me your book holds the solution to my issue.

As an author, you want to encapsulate the biggest benefits for the reader on the back cover.  So let’s take a look at some quick tips to help in writing your back cover copy.

First off, step outside your writer circle and think of a reader who picks up your book for the first time. Put yourself into her head. She doesn’t know much more than the topic, but she’s picking up your book for a reason. You want to make this capsule of information showcase that reading the book is the solution to the big question she’s asking.

Secondly, peruse Amazon.com or your local bookstore for bestsellers in your niche and analyze the back cover copy.  Model your copy after the standard.

Thirdly, your cover may include short bullet points outlining the biggest benefits of your book, one or two succinct, raving testimonials, and a tidbit to arouse curiosity.  Think of material that will sell the book.  Far better than your picture and bio would be a sizzling testimonial as to how the book has helped someone else gain a specific benefit.

Most importantly, appeal to your market’s core brilliance pattern.  If you know your folks are mostly hands-on Services, then by all means, talk about the time saving, tried and true techniques or old time wisdom with which your book is filled.   Speak to your audience from their specific brilliance pattern, and you’ll seize their attention throughout the entire manuscript!

Finally, get feedback from prospective buyers in your niche.  Print out your back cover copy, and poll people.  “On a scale of 1-10, how likely would you be to spend $15.95 on this book?  Why?”  Edit your copy until you’re getting a 95% positive response.

The back cover markets your entire book.  Take the time to polish that section until it shines with the benefits readers will gain from your book. You’ll make more sales and impact a much wider audience!

Writing the Book that Thrills Your Audience: Tapping into the Brain Patterns of Your Readers

When you write your book specifically to engage the core brilliance pattern of your audience, magic happens.  Your readers will not be able to put your book down.  They’ll share it with others readily.  And they’ll be on your doorstep, demanding more.

STEP into Destiny’s Core training shows you how to “crawl inside the heads” of others and read their thought patterns.  This information allows you to communicate deeply and succinctly to your readers in a way that delights, inspires, and magnetizes.

There are four basic thought patterns or brain patterns: Service (the linear, action-taking thinker), Potential (the abstract, creative thinker), Truth (the objective, skeptical thinker), the Empathy (the subjective, trusting thinker).

Let’s take a look at how you might engage an audience from each of the four patterns.

Writing the Best-Seller for Your Specific Audience

To create a page turner for a non-fiction book, you want to write to the core brain pattern of your readers, matching your lingo with the thoughts already running through their heads.

This connection will keep them engaged and magnetized throughout your book.  It also is the key to creating a book people will introduce into book clubs and recommend to others in their sphere.

From your market research, identify the general core-pattern of your audience.

Services – like to tap into tried and true wisdom

Truths – want to find out new facts

Empathies – want to connect with the book in a way that leaves them happy

Potentials – enjoy cutting-edge, “unheard of” ideas

You may have a market who is made up of all types, (for instance, if you cater to the health market) and there’s a special way of integrating more than one market.

But many times our general audience falls into a specific brain pattern or core-passion.

The self-help market, for instance, is usually comprised of Potentials who love to have their sense of wonder engaged throughout the book.  A more hands-on Service market appreciates proven methodology and learning the most efficient ways to go about things.

Since 70% of men are Truths, you may choose to write to a market made up of mostly males in a “Cliff’s notes” format.  They often appreciate accessing the facts in a quick-and-easy checklist.  Truths are attracted to clarity, so leave out the fluff when writing to this market.

If you have a market made up primarily of women (70% Empathies), then engage their appreciation for inspirational stories that evoke positive emotion.

Connecting with your audience’s core brilliance means you’re talking about the things they like in the language that means the most to them.  While you want to speak their language throughout the book, crafting your chapter titles and endings specifically to appeal to the reader will help keep them glued to your writing.

Writing from the core offers a powerful technique to take your book to bestseller in your niche!

Hope this has been helpful to you!

9 Tips for Self-Editing Your Masterpiece

You’re holding it in your hand. Your finished rough draft.

The time, the sweat, the angst and epiphanies have woven together a masterpiece, and it’s almost ready to share with the world.

There’s just one simple task left.

Editing.

If you’re thinking of self-editing your book, note that the editing can take as long or longer than the actual writing. That’s tough to hear, especially after investing so much into the creation process.

But proofing your own work can save hundreds of dollars on the self-publishing route.

I’ve edited the work of hundreds of blossoming and experienced writers. Here are a few of my tips for self-editing your own material.

9 Tips for Self-Editing Your Book

1. Let your chapter sit for at least a week so you can approach it with fresh eyes when you edit.

2. I like to print out the chapter and hold it in my hands when I edit. I’ll even grab scissors and tape and cut out paragraphs and tape them into different sections. Sometimes your brain needs a break from the computer screen.

Read through the chapter once for flow and initial errors that just pop out at you. Have your pen handy to cross out any paragraphs or sentences that don’t stick to the main point. Be ruthless here. Your writing may be superb, but if you discover a section that doesn’t expand the main idea, cross it out and use for a blog post or different book.

3. Now read the chapter aloud. Note any spots where your tongue fumbles the words- where something seems amiss. That’s a spot that needs attention. You may delete it completely or add in clarifying information.

4. It’s incredibly easy to move from “singular to plural” when you’re writing. You start out talking about him/her and end up using the plural “they.” Check all the spots you wrote the word “they” to see if you’ve switched to singular.

I prefer to use the plural, as it’s so much easier to read “they, them, their” than he/she, him/her and his/hers.
Whatever your choice, stay congruent.

5. Read over for specificity. Words like “that,” “it,” “thing,” “something” blur readers’ minds. You know the specifics, but they haven’t traveled through your head. “Don’t write “That’s confusing.” Specify “That method of communication is confusing.”

Highlight every vague word and re-paint a clearer picture.

6. Then highlight the being verbs – is, am, was, were, be, being. Choose vivid verbs instead.
One of the best places to find awesome verb-age is on Groupon.com! Their writers jazz up the ads with eye-popping action words, so

7. Ask or hire someone else to read through for grammar, punctuation, spelling. When you scan the chapter for flow, read it aloud, and check for clarity, some spelling and grammatical errors will pop out at you. But beyond that, I wouldn’t waste time reading over for these tiny details. Because you’ve invested in the content, your brain knows exactly how the sentences are “supposed to” read. Your eyes can literally see the material as it should be, not as it’s written.

Get a fresh pair of eyes to catch the rest of the errors, and save your sanity.

8. Finally, once you’ve had your eyes off the chapter for a few days or weeks, go back and read it backward -sentence by sentence. Cover the entire page except for that one sentence. You’ll be able to focus on tiny details you may have missed. Blocking the natural flow enables you to catch any final mistakes.

9. I’d also recommend asking two or three other people to do a final read of your manuscript to see if you missed anything. Many times you can find brilliant folks who will help edit just for the opportunity of reading a new book before it’s published.

Most people are not going to discount your brilliance because you left out a comma or put a period outside the quotes. They are less forgiving about spelling errors, though, so make sure you have a fresh pair of eyes edit for those. Don’t depend on spell-check to find mistakes.

And please note, if you do miss something, it’s not the end of the world. With print on demand, you can fix mistakes and resubmit your work.

Hope this has been helpful to you!
